The Federal Capital Territory police command said it
prevented the Ahmed Makarfi-faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its stakeholders meeting at International Conference Centre, Abuja to avoid breach of peace.
In a statement by its spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, the command said it received credible intelligence that the two factions in the party planned to use the venue for their meetings and a violent clash may have occurred, The Punch reports.
Manzah said: “ Credible intelligence at the disposal of the FCT Police Command indicated that the two factions i.e. the Ahmed Makarfi group and the Ali Modu Sheriff group scheduled to hold their meetings at the International Conference Centre today (Monday) and this can lead to serious clash and breach of public peace.”
He explained that the command advised the ICC management not to allow any of the group to use the place for any meeting to prevent breakdown of law and order.
The command denied allegations that it acted on the order of the APC or following any petition from Ali Modu Sheriff.
Manzah noted that the command provided visible security for the Makarfi group when they relocated to the Ekiti state government lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.
Earlier, the Makarfi-faction of the PDP was stopped from holding its stakeholders meeting at the ICC. The FCT police command mounted a barricade at the entrance of the event centre.
Following the sealing off of the venue for the stakeholders meeting by the police, the spokesman for the Senator Makarfi-led national caretaker committee of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye accused Sheriff and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of conniving to kill the PDP.
