Within nine years, half of all new vehicles sold in the United States should be zero-emission cars and trucks, according to an executive order signed by President Biden.

The future of the automobile industry is electric, "and there's no turning back," the president said during a White House South Lawn event Thursday afternoon.

Biden's target includes battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric and fuel cell electric vehicles.

Ford, General Motors and Stellantis said in a joint statement Thursday they hope "to achieve sales of 40-50% of annual U.S. volumes of electric vehicles (battery electric, fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles) by 2030 in order to move the nation closer to a zero-emissions future consistent with Paris climate goals."

Xenophobic attacks: Stop being ingrates – Thabo Mbeki tells South Africans

Former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, has condemned the current xenophobic attack on Nigerians and other foreigners in different parts of South Africa.

While calling on the country’s security agencies to up their game, the former President called on communities to report criminal activities to the appropriate quarters.

His words, “I must express my grave concern at events which took place in this city last week, in the context of what was reported as an anti-immigrant march.

“In that context, I want to say ‘thank you’ to Ringo Madlingozi for what he said in the songs he rendered.
“As South Africans, we should never forget the enormous sacrifices that were made by the sister people of Africa to help us achieve our liberation.

“We cannot now behave in a manner that treats fellow Africans, who are now residents in our country, as enemies or unwelcome guests, neither should we commit the offence of viewing or characterising African migrants in our country as criminals.

“When our communities discover or suspect criminal activities in their areas, regardless of the nationality of the alleged criminals, it must be reported to the [South African] Police Service.
“The police service itself has an absolute obligation to follow up on these community reports to avoid people taking the law into their own hands.
“All of us know that our country faces many socio- economic challenges such as poverty and unemployment. Not even one of these problems can or will be solved by attacking fellow Africans who have joined us as migrants.

“Those who organise and participate in these attacks, which must stop, must know that there is absolutely nothing revolutionary, progressive, patriotic, acceptable or of service to the people in what are, in fact, criminal activities.”

U.S Senate approves Carson for housing secretary post

WASHINGTON, March 2 (Reuters) - Ben Carson, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead U.S. housing policy, won Senate approval on Thursday.

The vote cleared the way for the retired neurosurgeon and former Republican presidential candidate to assume the post of secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He becomes the sole African-American member of Trump's cabinet.

Minister for Sex appointed in Spain

The Spanish Government has appointed a Minister of Sex in order to boost the nation’s declining population.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy confirmed Edelmira Barreira as the country’s top sex official.

With this move, the government hopes to boost Spain’s falling birth rate, which is one of the lowest in the developed world.
The Spanish government revealed that the move is aimed at getting Spaniards produce more babies.
Experts have however attributed the decline in birth rate among Spaniards to long working hours and the culture of eating late at night.
Spain in recent years has recorded declining birth rates which according to reports places it among developing countries with the lowest index.

OBASANJO BLAMES SOUTH AFRICA GOVT FOR XENOPHOBIC ATTACK

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has blamed the South African government over the ongoing anti-immigrant attack in the country.
He said this on Wednesday while playing host to the leadership of the Nigeria Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), Kuru, Jos.
Obasanjo explained to the team led by Major General Laurence Onoja, that the South African government had betrayed the struggle for the emancipation of the country against apartheid.
He called on African heads of government to promote good governance for the overall development of the continent.
“Youths can be so immature; they may not understand what Africa stands for, what our continental organisations stand for. If the youths do not understand what happened to the elders?
“What happened to the leadership, I will blame the youths of the country for the attacks, but I will blame the leaders more in any country that allows xenophobic attacks against fellow Africans for whatever reason.
“Having said that, it is also the responsibility of everyone of us in our different countries to prepare our countries, so that our youths that think that there is an Eldorado somewhere outside their countries will be made to know that there is no green pasture anywhere, the green pasture is here in your country.
“I feel disheartened to know that many of our youths perished while crossing the Sahara Desert or the Mediterranean,” he said

COCA-COLA TO USE RIVER WATER FOR PRODUCTION IN INDIA

An Indian Court ruled on Thursday that Coca-Cola and Pepsi should not be banned from using water from a river in the Southern State of Tamil Nadu.
The Madras High Court ruling came four months after petitioner PA Prabhakar argued that the beverage giants should not be allowed to use the water for commercial gain while farmers were struggling to irrigate crops.
Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages and PepsiCo India, subsidiaries of the multinational companies, told the court that they were being unfairly targeted, NDTV news channel reported.
They said they were part of a government-run industrial estate in Tirunelveli district where the waters of the Tamiraparani river were supplied to all industries in the complex.
The bottling plants in the estate have not been allowed to use the water for the past four months pending the court’s decision.
The ruling comes at a time when the two companies are also battling a boycott by local traders’ associations.
“Drinks like Coke and Pepsi are unhealthy as they have high sugar content and chemicals. “Fruit juices and Indian soft drinks are much better,’’ TT Vellaiyan, president of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Association, said.
Shops and restaurants were being asked to not stock the two beverages and encourage local businesses, Vellaiyan said.

AUSTRALIA CONFIRMS ARREST OF LOCAL MAN WHO TRIED TO HELP IS DESIGN HIGH-TECH MISSILES

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of an Australian man who tried to help the extremist militia organisation Islamic State develop high-tech laser and missile capabilities.
Turnbull said the 42-year-old man was arrested in the town of Young in the state of New South Wales on terrorism offences, but that he had not been involved in planning any attack in Australia.
“Police will allege that this individual, in a regional centre, acted with intent to provide ISIL (Islamic State) with the capability, with the technical capability, and high-tech capability, to detect and develop missiles,” Turnbull told reporters in Canberra.
Australian federal police commissioner Andrew Colvin said the man, a trained electrician, used the internet to provide services to Islamic State to help research and design laser warning technology and systems to develop long-range guided missile capabilities. “He was technically trained as an electrician with no direct knowledge of laser technology,” Colvin told reporters, alongside Turnbull, adding the arrest was part of an 18-month long operation. He said the “Australia-born Australian” had networks and contacts in Islamic State, “not just in the conflict zones but also in other parts of the world and relied on them to pass the information.”
Colvin said that police will charge the man on Tuesday afternoon with multiple terror-related offences, including two foreign incursion offences that carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Every new President in the United States spends his first month in office getting to know and thank the people who elected him into office, talking (politely) to fellow world leaders, selecting his executive team, using the media to get his message out and starts to implement his election campaign policies.
But not President Trump….
In less than 30 days as the President he’s managed to upset nearly everyone in the world – the Chinese, Russians, Mexicans, Iranians, Muslims – he even put the phone down on the Australian Prime Minister!
Unique and unlike any other American President before him he’s an egomaniac, bully and misogynist and not to talk of him being crass; he makes ex-President bush look clever. He sees himself as an Emperor and if care isn’t taken to curb him he has all the makings of a wannabe dictator. I mean what kind of President demeans himself by acting like a juvenile delinquent, on steroids, tweeting his every dissatisfaction on Twitter and having spats with people? Hasn’t he heard of a thing(s) called decency, conduct and protocol? Obviously not!
Breaking with protocol and in a rare display of nepotism, never before seen in American politics, Mr Trump has populated his inner circle with family and cronies – with his daughter, Ivanka, standing in as First Lady In Waiting( – is the real First Lady, Melania, on vacation?)
His election promise to get Muslims from seven countries banned from entering the United States has been overturned by judges who have deemed it unconstitutional and discriminating. He’s still going to build his Mexican wall but now realises America will have to pay for it. He is even reported to be considering the use of more than a force of 100, 000 national guards to hunt down illegal immigrants.
His erratic behaviour is causing a major concern amongst world leaders who are not sure what he’s going to next. This is the man who has got his finger firmly on the nuclear button forcing Russia to step up its game in readiness for an all-out nuclear war should Trump flip.
Already he’s fired all foreign US ambassadors, fired sally Yates, acting US attorney-general, for opposing his US-ban on Muslims policy. He’s fired six of his White House staff after they failed FBI background checks. Michael Flynn, his top national security official, quit in the wake of secret contacts with Russian spies during his election campaign and the White House is in total disarray.
He’s constantly battling the press, singling out CNN and The Post as his arch-enemies claiming they only publish ‘fake news’ all the time ( – especially when things don’t go his way!).
His reluctant First lady ,Melania, is holed up in Trump Tower in New York most of the time and doesn’t want to seem to come out and leading politicians reckon he needs a psychiatrist on stand-by 24/7 as he’s mentally unstable and could suffer a meltdown.
Also, because he’s a billionaire his business interests conflict with his official duties as President. He claims he has signed over all his business interests over to his sons, who now run his empire, but everybody knows he’s still the power behind the throne. Where will he find the time to run the country?
There have been widespread demonstrations, worldwide, protesting against his stand on Muslim immigrants and travel and his treatment of women.
Finally on the 16th of February he gave a surprise 90 minute press conference claiming he had achieved more in his first few weeks than any of his predecessors saying ‘the White House is running like a fine-tuned machine’, while at the same time taking a swipe at the New York Times and CNN (again!) over his campaign aides links with Russia.
Running a country, the size of America, is not the same as running a business empire or a TV reality programme and the incumbent will have to learn to follow protocol and listen to the wishes of the people who elected him in the first place. At a time when there is a lot of turmoil in the world, America needs a clear headed President to head the world’s most powerful nation something Donald Trump clearly isn’t.
If in the space of less than a month he has managed to alienate himself from the people he’s supposed to lead there’s no saying what he’ll do if he’s allowed to complete his four year tenure. Knowing the Americans they’ll probably impeach him before then or.
