I Joined APC To Kick Out PDP, I Achieved It - Oshiomhole

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, has said he joined the party to form an alternative platform capable of kicking PDP out of power.

Oshiomhole who stated that his objective was achieved added that he has no regrets in spite of his removal from office.

The former APC National Chairman said he was still an active member of the party.

He also expressed optimism that Nigeria would hold a hitch-free general election in 2023.

“ I accepted what happened in good faith and I remain committed to doing whatever I can to support the party.

“Am still active in all APC activities and I don’t think that I needed to be a chairman to be of relevance.

“I didn’t join the party to become chairman, I joined in order to form an alternative platform capable of kicking PDP out of power and that objective was achieved.

“It doesn’t matter the way things have gone. The primary purpose was not for me to be APC chairman,” NAN quoted Oshiomhole as saying.

It’s Too Early For Buhari To Support Any Aspirant For 2023 Presidency – Femi Adesina

Femi Adesina, a presidential spokesperson, has expressed that it is too early for President Muhammadu Buhari to support any aspirant for the presidency in the 2023 general election.

Adesina stated this on Friday during an interview with Channels Television.

Adesina, who explained that the meeting between Buhari and the APC chieftain on Thursday was a “goodwill visit”, said it will be unlike Buhari to jump the gun on supporting presidential aspirants for the 2023 election.

“That meeting actually happened, but it is all about goodwill and best wishes. We know that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had been in London about the same time the president was there,” he said.

“Like you said, we don’t believe what we read in social media but we have read a lot about asiwaju Tinubu’s health, so the president’s visit was a goodwill visit.

“The president still has two years less three months in his tenure of office. So, for him to start supporting somebody now will just be like jumping the gun and you know that President Buhari will never do that.

“Before the 2019 election, people began to campaign for him before INEC blew the whistle for campaign to start. He was the one who came out to say ‘no, don’t do it; don’t jump the gun’.

“The president himself will dare not jump the gun in terms of supporting one candidate or the other. Also, recall that he had said anybody that wants to be president after him should go out and work. That means the president may not be supporting anybody until maybe perhaps a candidate of the party emerges. Knowing President Buhari, he will never jump the gun.”

Only a Northerner can win Presidency for PDP in 2023 - Dokpesi

A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Raymond Dokpesi has said that the opposition can only regain power in 2023 if they field a Northerner.

Amid calls for power shift to the south, Dokpesi in an interview with Daily Independent said PDP members who are asking for the presidential ticket to be zoned to the South are only doing so because they want to copy the APC whose members are rooting for a zoning of the ticket to the South after the completion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023.

Asides claiming that there has been an imbalance of 11 years of Northern presidency in the PDP, the PDP Chieftain also alleged that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was rigged out of 2019 election.

Dokpesi said;

“In the case of PDP, let us look at it honestly. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the South-West did eight years; Goodluck Jonathan from the South-South also did six years. That made a total of 14 years.
“On the other hand, Umaru Yar’Adua from the North did three years, so there is an imbalance of 11 years. If in 2019, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had not been rigged out of that election, he would have come back in 2023 to say that he wants to do a second term. And would anybody have stood on his way? No!

“So, for the PDP, the presidential candidate must come from the North in 2023. People should exercise patience because it will still come back to the South”.

Commenting on calls for an Igbo presidency, Dokpesi averred that though he believes that it is fair that the South- East should produce the president as it is the only Southern zone not to have done so since 1999, the South-East cannot win if it gets the presidential ticket at this time.

PDP Crisis: PDP Governors Meeting To Continue Tuesday With Other Stakeholders

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF) said it would continue its meeting tomorrow with others stakeholders as part of efforts to resolve the leadership crisis rocking the party.

The meeting was called following the resignation of seven national deputy officers of the party, who accused PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, of incompetence in handling the party’s affairs.

The resigned officers are also demanding the resignation of Secondus as the party chairman.

The Chairman of the forum and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal on Monday disclosed this while briefing newsmen after the meeting of the governors held for about seven hours in Abuja.

Tambuwal said that the governors were committed at resolving the crisis.

“We discussed extensively on matters of the moment concerning our party and we have collectively resolved to continue to work together in unity.

“This meeting is continued tomorrow with other stakeholders. Very soon Nigerians and indeed, all of you will hear our solution but we are working towards resolving all issues, as a family.

“By the grace of God we are going to achieve that,” Tambuwal said.

NAN reports that the meeting which was held at Akwa-lbom Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, started at 11 am and closed at 5 p.m.

Secondus, who briefly attended the meeting in an interview with newsmen confirmed that he was not resigning his position as PDP chairman.

Governors in attendance were: Oluseyi Makinde Oyo State, Chairman of the forum and Governor of Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal, his Delta and Edo state counterparts, Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and Godwin Obaseki of Edo states.

Others are: Samuel Ortom of Benue, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Adamu Fintiri of Adamawa, Bala Mohammed Bauchi, Udoh Emmanuel of Akwa-lbom, Douye Diri of Bayelsa.

NAN reports that the party’s board of trustees on Friday met and resolved to set up a committee comprising of different stakeholders including the governors forum.

South-East Needs To Convince Nigeria On Why They Want To Produce The Next President - Peter Obi

Former governor of Anambra State and vice presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in 2019 elections, Peter Obi, said yesterday that the South-East needed to present a convincing argument to the rest of Nigeria on why the region should produce the next president.

Obi, who stated this in an interview on Arise TV, said though the South-East had compelling reasons to want to produce the country’s next president in 2023, it must embrace the politics of engagement and consultation, and not confrontation.”

He said: “We need to convince the other people why it should be us. And you know we have a convincing argument for that. But it needs to be convincing. We are not going to hold a gun in their head and say you must come here.

“Politics is about engagement and consultation, and not confrontation. You consult and discuss with other people and say, ‘this is how we need to do it for us to have peaceful co-existence.

“The decision will be done within the party. It’s not a question of my view or anybody’s view; it’s that of the party. Because even if we say it should come to the south and the party zones it to the north, there’s nothing that can be done.

‘’This is because these are major parties with a lot of members and stakeholders who will sit down and discuss at round tables. Politics, for me, is something you sit down at a roundtable, discuss and agree with each other.”

Obi criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s attempt at stimulating the economy through construction and revitalisation of infrastructure, stressing that what the government needed to do was strengthen the informal sector of the economy to be able to grow the economy.

Although the Buhari administration has invested hugely in rejigging the country’s vital infrastructure, inter-state rail networks and road corridors have been built, the former Anambra State governor advised the President to focus its efforts on growing small businesses in the country.

According to him, what will boost the economy is small and medium scale entreprises as it is in other parts of the world, and not building of infrastructure.

“You can’t use infrastructure to drive economic growth. You invest in education and the SME (Small, Medium Enterprises) sector instead to deal with poverty. Taking people out of poverty is not magic.”

I Will Not Resign As PDP Chairman - Secondus

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Uche Secondus has said that he will not resign from his position.

He made this comment on Monday shortly after some members of the party held a protest calling for his removal at the party's secretariat in Abuja.

"The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus has said that he will not resign his position."

“Prince Secondus said in a short statement from his media office that nothing so far warrants his resignation from the party position and those tiny minority calling for his resignation should come clean and tell party members across the country his offense why he should resign."

“He said he will remain focussed and committed to the ideals of the party which he swore to protect and defend upon his election to lead this great party 44 months ago.”, the statement read.

We Won’t Allow Old, Sick People Again In 2023 - Arewa Youths

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, on Friday, issued a warning ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

National President of AYCF, Yerima Shettima, warned that the group would not allow the recycling of old, weak, and sick Nigerians as president.

In a statement he signed, Shettima said democracy does not encourage a weak, tired and politically compromised leader.

According to Shettima: “Going forward, the AYFC will never allow the recycling of old, weak and sick citizens as leaders of this nation, moreso in a fast-changing and competitive world.

“Much as democracy gives everyone the right to contest for any elective office, it does not encourage the emergence of tired, weak, politically compromised, sick and overly unproductive persons as leaders of this modern society”.

Shettima’s comment is coming at a time when speculations are rife that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar may contest for the presidency in 2023.

Atiku, who lost the 2019 presidential election to President Muhammadu Buhari, is believed to be nursing another presidential election.

Similarly, Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is also believed to be nursing a presidential ambition in 2023.

However, both Tinubu and Atiku are yet to declare their intention, despite the speculations.

Age Shouldn’t Be Barrier To Aspiring Presidential Candidates - Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, Senator who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th Senate, has faulted former military president, Ibrahim Babangida’s claim that the age of next president should be 60 years old.

According to Senator Shehu Sani, who wrote on his Facebook wall on Saturday, said “the age of the next President doesn’t matter as long as he is healthy, experienced and can heal and unify the country now bleeding and tearing apart. The country needs peace and unity now.”

Recall that former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, said he already has someone in mind as the ideal next President of Nigeria, and he’s a man in his 60s.

Speaking on the 2023 presidential election during a televised interview on Friday, August 6, 2021, the former military dictator said his idea of a good Nigerian leader is someone who has a friend ‘virtually everywhere’.

He said such a person must also be well-versed in economics, and be a good politician able to talk to Nigerians.
