According to this interesting article by Women’sHealth, after considering the importance of calcium to the body and formation of bone, here are 4 foods that contain a large amount of calcium.
1. Salmon
One six-ounce serving of fresh salmon offers 340 milligrams of calcium, while a five-ounce serving of canned salmon has 350 milligrams (the bones in the canned stuff pack in more calcium). An excellent source of omega-3 fats, salmon helps keep your heart healthy and prevents inflammation. It’s also a great source of vitamin D, which your body needs in order to fully absorb calcium. Plus you’ll down 36 grams of protein per six-ounce serving, too. “You can find salmon on nearly every restaurant menu, too, so it’s easy to get your fill,” says Zeitlin. Eating at home? Grill it and pair it with Brussels sprouts, poach it and serve it on top of sautéed greens, or use canned salmon as a simple salad topper. Love sushi? Seaweed offers an additional calcium bump of 17 milligrams per two tablespoons.
2. Oats Meal with Soya Milk
A half cup of dry plain oats will give you 200 milligrams of calcium. Even better, the four grams of whole-grain fiber fills you up and keeps things moving through your digestive system, helping to lower your cholesterol and support your heart and gut health. Oats are also rich in B vitamins, which aid your metabolism by helping your body to convert food into energy. Cook your oatmeal with a cup of almond milk for another 300 to 400 milligrams of calcium. And for added crunch, flavor, and another 36 milligrams, top with two tablespoons of almonds.
3. Sardines
One tiny three-ounce serving packs 370 milligrams of calcium. And, like all fish, sardines are also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. “I like to grill them and throw them on top of a salad,” says Zeitlin. Make a mock Caesar salad by chopping them and mixing with three tablespoons of olive oil, one tablespoon of vinegar, and a pinch of salt and pepper, then tossing with calcium-rich dark leafy greens. Or add them into a stir-fry with spinach, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes.
4. Chickpeas
This versatile superfood yields 315 milligrams of calcium in one-and-a-half cups—plus about 30 grams of filling fiber and 10 grams of protein. Drizzle them in olive oil and add a pinch of salt, then roast ‘em up. Eat them alone as a snack, or use as a topper on salads, soups, or stews. You can also blend chickpeas half and half with white beans (which have 190 milligrams of calcium in one cup) to make a white-bean soup.

Tech gadgets have no doubt made our daily activities easier. It seems technology has an answer for everything. However, what you should know is that for everything that has advantages, there are also disadvantages. In this case, the disadvantage or side effect of technology is the negative impact it is having on your health.
Unfortunately, many tech geeks are unaware of this because the effect may take a while to manifest. As a result, it is important for anyone attached to any tech gadget to be aware of its negative effects before it is too late. Here are ways your tech gadgets may be affecting your health:
1. Hearing loss
According to an international online travel agency, Jumia Travel, some persons have their ears plugged for nearly half of the day. They are either listening to music or radio. Unknown to them, this regular music banging in your ears is affecting your eardrums. You should give your ears a break in order to prevent hearing loss or damage.
2. Insomnia
Insomnia is the inability to sleep. Many of us don’t get enough sleep because when you are supposed to be dozing off, you are fiddling with your gadgets, especially your smartphone. Then you complain that you are not getting enough sleep and you are unable to function the following day. Some of the negative effects of sleep deprivation include heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke. Try to get rid of your gadgets if you want to get a good sleep.
3. Nomophobia
A smartphone is one of the most popular gadgets many of us cannot do without. In other words, you are anxious and cannot concentrate because you are not with your smartphone. This means you have nomophobia (no-mobile-phone-phobia). The dependence on your mobile phone can affect your health, because you can be depressed if you are without your phone. You can try to leave your phone at home once in a while.
4. Obesity
You spend hours sitting at a particular spot working on your computer or your phone. Unknown to you, the more you sit down for hours at that same spot daily, the more you are susceptible or vulnerable to obesity. If you want to avoid obesity, stop spending too much time sitting surfing your phone.
5. Neck and back pain
Neck and back pain can be unbearable and most people suffer from this because of the time we spend on our gadgets. This is a health problem that you may overlook but if you are not careful, the neck and back pain may worsen and you may be required to go to the doctor.

Cooking Rice With This method Can Result in Hypertension, Diabetes, Cancer Or Death (See Best Method)

It has been revealed that the way people cook their rice can end up affecting their health very seriously.
In the average home, rice is a must-eat food on a daily basis, especially when you have children around.
It’s so easy to cook — or so many of us assume, what with the unceremonious ways we pour it into the pot and cook it in a jiffy!
Yet, researchers are saying that the way we cook rice can lead to diseases and death!
Scientists warn that rice contains a worrying amount of arsenic, a harmful chemical that can cause heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
According to a group of researchers in Northern Ireland, the way most people cook rice, which is by boiling it in a pan until it absorbs the water, doesn’t get rid of the toxin.
Researchers warn that traces of the poison arsenic – a chemical that contaminates rice as a result of industrial toxins and pesticides used in the growing process – can be found in the rice even after cooking the way we do.
The safest way to cook rice is to soak it overnight first, wash it with cool water the following morning, before finally cooking it.
The researchers found that this reduced arsenic levels by 80 percent.
Chronic exposure to arsenic has recognised links to a range of health problems including heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Thankfully, there’s no reason to panic just yet, as a series of experiments showed that it is possible to reduce our levels of exposure to arsenic by simply changing the way we cook rice.
A professor of biological sciences at Queens University Belfast, Andy Meharg, tested three ways of cooking rice to see whether it altered the levels of arsenic.
In the first method, he used a ratio of two parts water to one part rice, allowing the water to ‘steam out’, as identified above.
In the second, he used five parts water to one part rice, washing off excessive water before serving. This saw the levels of arsenic almost halved.
Finally, the rice was soaked in water overnight before being cooked the next day, resulting in an 80 per cent reduction of the toxin.
For the safest results, the overnight rice should be rinsed until the water is clear, before being drained and boiled in a saucepan using a ratio of five parts water to one part rice.

[Must Read] 7 Weird Signs You Might Have A Heart Problem

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most recent statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women over 35, accounting for one in every four deaths. This is why you must take good care of your heart to be healthy and keep living. Here are signs you should take serious indicating that you might have a heart disease according to Women’sHealth.
1. Swollen Legs and Ankles
That extra-large burrito may not be the only reason you’re feeling super bloated. While leg bloating can result from all kinds of things, it can also be caused by a heart valve problem. A build up of fluids (a.k.a. edema) is a common symptom of congestive heart failure, when your heart is unable to process blood in and out at the proper rate, says Goldberg.
Before you freak out, know that this type of swelling, in contrast to run-of-the-mill bloating, will get worse with time and/or begin creeping further up your body. So if the swelling reaches that point of severity, you know it’s time to call a doctor.
2. Headaches
Before you pop a Tylenol and shrug off that head pain, know that severe headaches can be symptomatic of a stroke or blood clot, too, says Goldenberg. While a headache alone isn’t necessarily indicative of a heart issue, if you’re experiencing it along with other symptoms like stiffness in your neck, fatigue, or dizziness, or it comes on suddenly, you could be in danger of an aneurysm and should seek medical attention.
We asked a hot doc how to treat a headache without meds. Here’s what he said:
3. Exhaustion
This might be the hardest sign to decipher because there are a million reasons you might feel tired—lack of sleep, stress, etc. But here we’re talking an abnormal level of fatigue. “If you’re relatively fit and all of a sudden start feeling winded climbing a flight of stairs, there’s a problem,” says Goldberg. Another sign: If you’re feeling a level of weakness that you’d previously only experienced when sick with the flu. In this case, your heart may be struggling to oxygenate your body.
While this symptom is easy to dismiss, particularly for women who refuse to slow down, it should be a red flag if you’re experiencing it along with any other strange symptoms.
4. Stomach Cramping
Many people assume heart pain is felt directly in the chest, or in the left arm, says Goldberg. But what some don’t realize is that the pain can radiate elsewhere in the body, too. “It’s not uncommon that I see people complaining of stomach pain, when really the issue is their heart,” she says.
When you’re feeling those sharp stomach cramps, it’s possible that your heart is radiating pain signals to your stomach. Although this could also indicate the flu or heartburn, Goldberg says if it’s something you’ve never felt before, go to a doctor just to be sure.
5. Fainting
Fainting is the result of a drop in blood pressure, and that can be brought on by a number of things from changes in posture (think: that rush to the head you get when you get out of bed too fast) to which medications you’re taking. But it could also be indicative of a more serious issue. A valve disorder that doesn’t allow proper blood flow, a too slow or too fast heartbeat, or an aortic tear could all be the cause for fainting, says Goldberg.
If you faint in an isolated incident, it probably isn’t cause for concern. On the other hand, you should consider seeing a doctor if you’re fainting persistently or have fainted and are experiencing additional symptoms.
6. Dizziness
Like many of these symptoms, occasional dizziness is not a cause for concern. That light-headed feeling could result from standing up too quickly, dehydration, etc. But if the dizziness persists, that’s when it’s time to see a doctor. If the problem is your heart, it’s likely due to artery blockages or valve issues messing with your blood pressure, says Goldberg.
7. Upper Back Pressure
Again, a heart attack isn’t always felt in the heart. Often patients say a heart attack feels like there’s an elephant sitting on their chest; but that elephant could also be on your upper back, says Goldberg. If you’re feeling an overwhelming amount of pressure on your upper back, that could be a sign of a heart attack.

See Why You Should Know Your Genotype Before Considering Getting Married (See Here)

A lot of Medical doctors and marriage counselors advise that couples who are about to get married should go for specific medical tests before tying the knot.
While this is very important, many couples don’t heed this advice for fear of probably incompatible results, especially as regards their haemoglobin genotype, emerging to become a reason for not getting married after such a long and deep emotional investment into each other (it can be very heart-breaking and some people might go into depression that would require psychiatric care if they’re compelled to cut off the relationship and marriage after such a long time of planning about their future together).
Instead of waiting till you meet that special half with whom you will spend your lifetime before realizing the importance of such specific medical tests, why not go for these medical tests now that you’re probably single or have not met that special someone yet?
Whether you’re a man or woman, you should undergo a haemoglobin genotype test now before you meet your lifetime partner when it might either be too late or the outcome of your incompatibility could drive you into a mental breakdown.
The Importance of knowing your Haemoglobin genotype
There are several disease variants of the haemoglobin gene, but the commonest ones are haemoglobin S and C. The normal haemoglobin gene present in adult humans is A which exist as AA.
However, some people have the A and S pairing as AS; some have the S and another S pairing as SS which is known as sickle cell disease; and a few people have S and C pairing to form SC which is also as bad as SS.
If your haemoglobin genotype test comes out as AS, SS or SC, it means you can give birth to a child with SS if you marry someone who is AS or SS. For instance, if a man with AS marries a woman with AS, one in every 4 children they have will be SS. But that’s probability in theory. In reality that one child could be the first child; and that one child in every 4 children could manifest as 4 children in every 16 children, meaning the first 4 children can be SS and the couple has to give birth to more than 10 children to stand a chance of having a child who is either AA or AS!
Thats huge!!
Taking care of a child who is SS can be a nightmare especially for couples who don’t have the financial capacity; and even for those with the financial resources, the child may still die from a crisis or complication that can occur when nobody expects it. Hence, knowing your haemoglobin genotype before entering a relationship that could lead to marriage will enable you talk about it with your partner, and if you’re incompatible, the possibility of marriage can easily be ruled out at this early stage of the relationship, unlike when you’re getting to know your haemoglobin genotype after proposal and the wedding is a few weeks away!
What’s your genotype? Go find out today!

Warning to Nigerians over the consumption of barbecued beef popularly called Suya.

A professor of Community and Public Health Nutrition has sounded a note of warning to Nigerians over the consumption of barbecued beef popularly called Suya.
Consumers of barbecued beef popularly called “Suya” have been advised to always ensure that generous portions of onions, cabbage, tomatoes and other vegetables were eaten along with it.
Suya is generally made with skewered beef, ram, or chicken. Innards such as kidney, liver and tripe are also used.
The thinly sliced meat is marinated in various spices which include peanut cake, salt, vegetable oil and other flavourings, and then barbecued.
Ngozi Nnam, Professor of Community and Public Health Nutrition at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.
Ms. Nnam said that there was a link between its consumption and increased risk of cancer, noting that consumption of suya garnished with onions and other vegetables has a strong cancer-lowering effect.
“Eating Suya can actually cause cancer. This comes from the reaction of meat and the smoke during Suya preparation which results in a toxic compound that can cause cancer.
“Smoking of the meat is what causes cancer. Some metabolites from food can cause cancer. What is important is to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables to increase antioxidants in the body.
“The antioxidants can neutralise or react with the toxic metabolite from food to prevent cancer,” she said.
According to her, Suya is good to eat with onions and cabbage because they react with the toxic substance produced by smoke to prevent cancer. “It is good to eat Suya with onions and other fruits and vegetables.’’
The nutritionist, however, urged Nigerians to consume more of fish than beef. She said that the major benefit of eating beef was that it provided needed protein for the individual.
“It is however healthier to eat fish than meat because some fish e.g. srumbia fish contain omega 6 fatty acid which is good for the body.
“Omega 6 fatty acid is also very good for infants because it is required for proper brain development.’’
In addition, she warned against the consumption of smoked fish, saying “again the problem with smoked fish is the toxic substance produced by the smoke. “If we can grill it, it will be better than smoking it,’’ she advised.
Ms. Nnam, also the President of Nutrition Society of Nigeria, said that the National Policy on Food and Nutrition has been implemented across the country.
“The National Policy on Food and Nutrition was launched during the Nutrition Week in September 2016 by the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari.
“After the launch, the policy has been domesticated and being implemented in different states of the federation. The Ministry of Budget and National Planning is overseeing this activity with state nutrition officers,’’ she said.
The policy seeks to improve the nutritional status of all Nigerians, with particular emphasis on the most vulnerable groups including children, women, and the elderly.

An Abuja-based medical expert has warned that excessive consumption of catfish could increase the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Arikawe Adeolu, a medical practitioner at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, said that catfish contained omega-6 fatty acids. The acid, he explained, could increase the level of inflammation in the body.He added that inflammation was the underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers and diabetes.
He said that although catfish also contained omega-3 fatty acids, which had a lot of health benefits, the ratio of omega-6 was far greater than omega-3 fatty acids.Mr. Adeolu said that this made it necessary for the fish to be consumed in moderation to prevent health complications.“Catfish is rich in two fatty acids – omega-3 fatty acids and the omega-6 fatty acids.
“The omega-3 fatty acids help reduce the concentration of bad cholesterol in the blood stream and increase the concentration of good cholesterol in the blood stream.“It also helps protect the heart and the cardiovascular system from any form of disease, prevents inflammation within the body and helps reduce the quantity or concentration of inflammatory substances in the body.
“The underlining basis for most cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer disease and many other diseases that we know today, is chronic inflammation, which signifies a long standing inflammation in the body.“This is where the catfish controversy comes in.
A lot of reports have advised against eating it and this is because although it contains omega-3fatty acids, which have many health benefits, it contains more omega-6 fatty acids.“Omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory in the sense that they increase the level of inflammation within the body and make one more predisposed to any kind of disease.“When catfish features a lot in your diet, you consume more omega-6 fatty acids in your diet than the protective omega-3 fatty acids.
“Therefore, you are more predisposed to diseases if you consume a lot of catfish.“The optimal ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids is supposed to be four to one, but because the catfish is reared artificially and is fed with synthesized food, the ratio can be up to ten to one,’’ he said.
Mr. Adeolu also said even though there were a lot of controversies surrounding the consumption of catfish, it still held some advantages over most fishes consumed today. He said catfish was a good source of protein, rich in essential amino acids needed to build muscles, bones and different tissues in the body.
He explained that catfish contained a moderate amount of caloriesper serving or per gram, hence, was an ideal choice for those watching their body weight.
According to him, catfish is rich in phosphorus and magnesium, which are essential micro-nutrients that play a significant role in a lot of biochemical processes in the body.
“Catfish has a very low amount of mercury, whichis very toxic to the human body and can, when consumed in large quantities, damage the nervous system,” Mr. Adeolu said.
