University of Benin (UNIBEN) Female Graduate probed by the school authorities for Examination malpractice ordered to rewrite all exams from 200 Level.

UNIBEN began investigating all the results of female student who wore ” Aggressive Malpractice” shirt during her sign out parade.

Earlier last week, the management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) ordered that all the results of the student be investigated after she wore a sign out shirt with the inscription “aggressive malpractice brought me this far” during her signing out parade.

This came after a video of the said student identifies as Peace Ufuoma, from the department of Microbiology, went viral a few days ago.

The institution made a statement two weeks ago on the Thursday, that the decision to probe the student in question’s results was taken at a meeting that held on the 13th of July.

The female student in question has been reportedly ordered to rewrite all her papers from her Level two till the end of Level four. This sounds very heartbreaking but the school management is of the opinion that Peace Ufuoma be used as a scape goat to tell every student of the University of Benin that examination malpractices are not allowed within her walls.

The Senate has commenced process of amending the establishment Act of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), with particular interest on age of candidates participating in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The lawmakers suggested in the new amendment that 18 years should be set as age for any candidate that will like to participate in UTME henceforth, as against the practice of candidates participating in the exercise as early as 14 years.

Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic Education, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, disclosed the information on Monday when she led other Committee members on oversight visit to JAMB headquarters in Abuja.

“We have the responsibilities of making laws and legislate. We have identified two major areas that we need to go into the process of amending the act establishing JAMB. That’s the area of support we will give,” she said.

The Committee insisted that candidates should neither sit nor be admitted into the university below the age of 18, as age has a lot to do with learning ability.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in collaboration with Joint Campus Committee(JCC) Osun axis on Wednesday cautioned the Management of UNIOSUN over its recent threat to expel over four thousands students who are yet to pay their tuition fees.

The associations, through a press statement jointly signed by Afolabi Saidi and Saidi Miftah, Deputy Coordinator NANS zone D, and Chairman of JCC respectively, carpeted UNIOSUN management for trying to jeorpadise the future of students without consideration.

Describing the resolve of the management to expel students with outstanding fees as barbaric, the statement expressed the displeasure of the students’ bodies over the development, calling for restrain on the part of the university management.
It noted that making expulsion a panacea to the challenge of nonpayment of tuition fees would worsen the socio-economic situation in the school.
“We are here today to show that our unity as an association in moving Nigeria forward in the course of protecting the students’ interests cannot be shaken.
“We however urge the Osun State government and the State House of Assembly to quickly intervene in the matter in a more determined manner to tackle the anti-students policy of the management of the University and other challenges students are facing in the state.

“We want the State government and the State House of Assembly to prioritise issues at Osun State University and Osun State College of Education as most critical issues to be addressed,” the statement reads in part.
The associations however demanded for immediate reversal of the plan to expel students of UNIOSUN on any ground, adding that efforts should be put in place to make students more productive and the university more self-sufficient through researches and creative ventures, enjoining government to protect the interest of teeming less privileged students in the universty,
Nairabreed recalls that the Vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Labode Popoola recently told journalists that unpaid tuition fees in the ivory tower have accumulated to N2billion.

Moreover, the Acting Registrar of the higher institution of learning, Mr Gafar Shitu in a press statement on Sunday, said any student that failed to pay the tuition fees before the expiration of February 28, 2017 deadline would no longer be a student of the university.

He added that students who could not meet up with the deadline and do not want their studentship terminated may apply in writing to the school authorities for leave of absence.

Dr Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, has urged Nigerian universities to be agents of community development rather than running all-comers’ programmes.
Saraki gave the advice in a goodwill message at the 3rd Biennial Conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities in Abuja. He was represented by Sen. Jubril Barawo, Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Education. Senate President Bukola Saraki Saraki said in the past, Nigerian universities were known to have experts in certain programmes but this was no longer the case.
“Today, it is a different scenario, as many Nigerian universities want to run all programmes from university teaching hospital to having a nuclear department. He said the development had paved way for the influx of unprepared students many of who could not address their special needs.
“There is, therefore, the need for Nigerian universities to change from being conventional sources of graduates to becoming engines of community development. “Nigeria needs a new generation of universities that can serve as engines of community development and social renewal,’’ Saraki said. He said that fundamental reforms would be needed in the curriculum design of the universities to boost their efforts in proffering lasting solution to the nation’s economic social and environmental challenges.
Saraki urged the committee to look into some other unwholesome practices by some lecturers who took delight in taking up multiple appointments or full time employment in more than one university. He said the development accounted for the reduction in the quality of graduates, as a result of lack of adequate supervision by lecturers. He called for an end to labour disputes in higher institutions to check strikes, adding that better funding would make them relevant ‘’in the ever-competitive contemporary education.’’
The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, identified resource constraints as one of the challenges facing the universities. He, however, called on the university authorities to manage the available resources at their disposal effectively and efficiently to achieve their aims and objectives.
Adamu’s massage was tagged: `The Journey so far and the Future; the Ministerial Strategic Plan for Higher Education’’.
The minister was represented on the occasion by Hajia Fatima Gidum, Director, Tertiary Education in the ministry.
Adamu urged the conference to come up with a framework for the funding of tertiary education and augment the statutory resources.
The conference, with theme, “Sustainable Tertiary Education in a Harsh Economic Environment’’, will end on Thursday.
