BENSON IDAHOSA UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES PRESIDENTIAL AMNESTY PROGRAMME PARTNERSHIP, POISED FOR NTL. DEV.

Benson Idahosa University is proud to be one of the first institutions to participate in the training of delegates under the Presidential Amnesty Program.
The Benson Idahosa University Presidential Amnesty Programme Award which was held to celebrate the success of the programme in the University and reward excellence among beneficiaries took at the Main Auditorium, Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Edo State.
The Institution graduated 169 students amongst which are 8 first Class Honours , (47) 2nd Class Honours Upper Division, (108) Second Class Honours Lower Division and (6) Third Class Honours. Thus, the award ceremony was organized by the University to celebrate and honour the students and success of the Amensty programme in Benson Idahosa University.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, however expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for sustaining the Amnesty Programme. He noted that the scheme has been of remarkable benefit to the people of the Niger Delta region and Nigerians in general. Prof. Izevbigie reiterated the willingness of the institution to further parley with the Government to train the delegates with the core purpose to change Nigeria.
During the award ceremony, four ex-agitators namely; Fianka Diamond, Ikpaazaere Deborah, Miss Odiki Seimiekumo and Nneli Chijioke, who made First class Honours in their different disciplines, through the sponsorship of the Presidential Amnesty Programme at the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), Benin, were offered employment in their respective departments of discipline by the Institution, as graduate Assistant Lecturers. In his response, Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Federal Government Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier-General Paul Boroh, said that the partnership between the Federal Government and Benson Idahosa University has been effective in the training and re-integration of the beneficiaries. He further stated that it was a privilege and an honor that the programme has thus far achieved about 200 First Class and Second Class Upper graduates through institutions like Benson Idahosa University.
On his part, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja; the King Jaja of Opobo, thanked the University for training the students to become useful members of the society and examples of good behavior to others. The Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom further said that it was a thing of joy to know that eight of the students made First class.
During the Award Ceremony, Chief Brown Mede who represented the Olu of Warri, commended the University for organizing the programme and extolled it as a right step in the right direction. He added that they were glad with the partnership scheme with the University and encouraged the University to keep up on their good works. Furthermore, he urged the Students to imbibe the values that they had been thought while in the University as they were a lot of things they could add to their immediate environments.
The event ended with a closing remark from the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sam Guobadia where he appreciated all dignitaries who honoured the invitation from the University to attend the event. He also remarked the University’s resolve to ensure the programme achieves its purpose
