FG, ACOMORAN SET FOR BIOMETRIC DATA CAPTURING OF OKADA, TRICYCLE RIDERS

The Federal government, in collaboration with the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motor Cycle Owners, Repairers and Riders association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN) is to embark on Biometric Data capturing of all motorcycle and tricycle operators in the country in order to check the incidence of crime being perpetrated using tricycles and motorcycles.
The national president of ACOMORAN, Alhaji Shehu Maihula Babangida who announced this in Abuja while unveiling the technology to be used in the data capturing said with the proposed Data capturing of operators of motorcycle and tricycles, there would be no need for the nationwide ban on Okada operators as being canvassed in certain quarters.
According to Alhaji Maihula, an Abuja based indigenous software Development Company Clevland Investment Management Limited is the technical partner that would carry out biometric data capturing process of the members of the association. He said ‘the initiative is necessary to enable the association have a comprehensive biometric database of its members across the country while deploying RFID technology with the view to managing the security challenges associated with commercial cyclists.
The President revealed that the modalities for the nationwide biometric capturing would be unveiled soon, noting that the association would collaborate with the federal government to tackle the country’s security challenge in the country. In his remarks at the occasion, the chief host of the occasion and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi faulted those canvassing for the banning of Okada nationwide, saying such move would have a negative effect on the economy. He noted that rather than ban motorcycles and Tricycles, there should be a “reorientation of the riders and proper control of their activities that will make them obey rules and regulations in their various states”.
Mr Amaechi said commercial cyclists are usefulness to the masses, farmers and people in remote areas who rely solely on them as means of transportation in Nigeria so banning them would have a negative effect on the people who depend on them for their livelihood.
The event which was held at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre Abuja had in attendance Chairman Senate Committee on Transport, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Chairman Committee on Land Transport of the House of Representatives as well as the representatives of the Inspector General of Police as well as the Corp Marshal of the Federal Road safety Corps.
