Tekno rules Best of the Best 2016.
Earlier this month we set a poll to ask who do you think ruled 2016 in the Nigerian music industry. We showcased 16 of the best in the Nigeria and on Instagram for who they think ruled supreme and is the fans favourite.

These 16 were picked based on their hit singles, crisp clean videos, international crossovers, content driven songs and tune popularity. By virtue of the votes as cast we can deduce as follows:
Instagram Poll – We had a total of 159 votes. Tekno 47, Wizkid, 26, Mr Eazi 25, Falz 15, Phyno 14, Yemi Alade 5, Kiss Daniel 5, Tiwa Savage 4, Reekado Banks 4, Ycee 4, Adekunle Gold 3, Patoranking 3, Olamide 2, Flavour 1, Simi 1 and Davido 0.

Instagram poll – We had a total of 159 votes.
Now let us digest this result for better comprehension. 2016 saw a lot of surprise acts springing out with tunes that caught their peers off guard and swooped the Nigerian music industry of its feet. We would now analyze the top 3 according to the votes based on our popular “5 Rules” – Pen Cred, Wiki Tales, Mic Skillz Top Bite, Floetry and Tube View.
Tekno –
Pen Cred – The best we gathered was he enrolled in a music school by age 8. He did his high school at Heritage School, Kaduna. He also studied at Green Island but didn’t really finish because he believes he understands the practical aspect of music, so he read and understood the science of music.
Wiki Tales – As a kid, he liked to talk a lot and connect with people. He belonged to the first set of dancers in his school. They were called ‘The Enclomadies’. They used the first letter in everybody’s name to christen the group. In church, He used to play musical instrument, dance and sing. Tekno Miles was first signed under K-Money Entertainment. His first single titled “Holiday” was released under the imprint. With featured vocals from Davido, “Holiday” was positively accepted and gained massive airplay. In 2012 while in Abuja, Tekno Miles was spotted by renowned Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu at an event after Tekno Miles received a standing ovation following the performance of a song titled “Onye Ne Kwu”, his remix of Ice Prince’s “Oleku”. It was at the same event he met Iyanya and Ubi Franklyn, the manager of Made Men Music Group (Triple MG) who he became friends with. Ubi and Iyanya eventually encouraged Tekno Miles to move to Lagos to further his music career. Before signing to (MMMG) he said he got offers he turned down, according to him he had offers, from Pukano Music, from Jim Iyke and a lot of people. He has 11 nominations of which he won 2 (Duro – best pop video NMVA 2015 and best new act MTV Africa Music Awards 2016). He is a producer, actor and dancer also.

Wizkid –
Pen Cred – Dropped out of Lead City University in 2011 in his 3rd Year where he was studying ‘International Relations’.
Wiki Tales – Started singing at age 11, releasing a 7-track album entitled Lil Prinz (2001). He formed a group called the Glorious Five with a couple of his church friends. The group dropped an album prior to dismembering. Wizkid later met OJB Jezreel, a record producer who prevented him from recording for a year. While visiting Jezreel’s studio frequently, he watched 2 Face Idibia record Grass 2 Grace and Sound Sultan record Jagbajantis. A year later, Wizkid started recording. His first song featured OJB Jezreel. The song was met with great reception throughout Surulere (his birth place in Lagos). Wizkid cited Naeto C as one of the people who mentored and coached him while he was 15 years old. Wizkid once said his parents weren’t receptive of his music from the onset. In order to gain his father’s trust, he had to work hard and spent lots of time in the studio. Wizkid said he and Banky W became friends prior to starting a professional relationship. He co-wrote Banky W’s “Omoge You Too Much”, a song off the The W Experience album. In 2006, he collaborated with Naeto C and Ikechukwu. In 2009, Wizkid became a household name within Nigeria’s musical landscape and has been featured on many songs across Africa. On 2nd May 2013, he released his album “Ayo’s” lead single “Jaiye Jaiye” featuring Femi Kuti. Wizkid said that he collaborated with Femi Kuti in order to prevent people from depicting him as an artist whose lyrics revolve around girls, cars and materialistic things. On 5 January 2015, Wizkid released the music video for “Ojuelegba”. The official remix of the song which premiered on OVO Sound Radio on July 5th 2016 featured vocals from Drake and Skepta. April 5th 2016, he became Nigeria’s first artist to emerge on Billboard’s Twitter Last 24 hours chart following his guest feature on Drake’s “One Dance” single, which charted at number 21. He has worked with international stars likes of Akon, R Kelly, Chris Brown, Drake, Skepta, Justin Skye, Tinnie Tempah to mention a few. He has enjoyed several achievements and awards including a BET Award, a MOBO Award, five The Headies Awards, two Channel O Music Video Awards, six Nigeria Entertainment Awards, two Ghana Music Awards, two Dynamix All Youth Awards, two City People Entertainment Awards, a Future Award. He has also received three nominations at the MTV Europe Music Awards. He has also been nominated four times at the World Music Awards.

Falz The Bahd Guy
Pen Cred – An alumnus of the University of Reading, London after graduating with an LLB honors degree in Law. He was called to the bar in 2012 after graduating from the Nigeria Law School, Abuja but music called.
Wiki Tales – Falz started music as a hobby while in secondary school. He formed a music group with a friend called “The School Boys”. In 2009, while in high school, he released a compilation of some of his recordings as a mixtape titled Shakara: The Mixtape. In 2011, Falz released a single titled “Waz Up Guy” before he went on to release “High Class” and “Currency” which gained him grounds in the Nigerian music industry. On 30 May 2014, Falz released his debut studio album titled Wazup Guy which was received to critical acclaim among music critics. Falz describes his style of music as “Wahzup Music”- fusion of comic lyrics with the contemporary hip-hop in a faux Yoruba accent. Falz shot into full limelight in 2015 after his song titled “Ello Bae” which is a comical rendition delivered in one of the funniest lyrics/punchlines got music critics and fans alike talking. His 2014 song”Marry Me” (featuring vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade) won him a nomination in the “Best Collaboration of The Year” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards thus he became a force to reckon with in the music industry in Nigeria. He has 13 award nominations and won 4.

On this note we give the crown to non other than Triple MMG/Sony Music signee Tekno Miles a.k.a Alhaji Tekno the Pana Master. He has established himself not just as a singer but a full musician with dazzling dance steps and a mastery of various instruments like the piano and acoustic guitar. His constant funny activities on social media has also endeared him to many as he keeps all entertained. During a tour of Europe sometime this year, a video of him dancing to his song Pana at an airport in Amsterdam went viral with many views and commendation for his display while waiting to catch a flight. The song Pana caught everyone off guard and spread like wild fire with its infectious rhythm and lyrics. It topped charts across Nigeria for weeks, rocked parties and dance halls across Africa with notable acts like Sarkodie and Yemi Alade lending their admiration for his wonderful talents with a cover of the song. His Sony Music deal we gather would be announced anytime soon officially and thus his sojourn to greater heights in 2017 begins. We wish him all the best in his glowing career and pray for more hits to keep us all glued to his style of music. Tekno rules Best of the Best 2016. All hail the King of Pana!!!
